Heading east along the coast road, it is hard not to notice Tirebolu: a cape reaching into the sea with a castle on top. The most characterful of Giresun's coastal districts. 45 minutes from the centre, half a day is comfortably enough.

Tirebolu Castle (St. Jean)

The symbol of the district. On top of the rocky cape reaching into the sea, small but very well placed. It takes its name from the Genoese period. From above, the harbour, the shore and the coastline stretching east are all in view.

The climb is short and easy. For photography, late afternoon is ideal: as the sun drops to the west, the castle and the sea catch the same light.

Bedrama Castle

The district's second castle, standing inland on a hill. Unlike Tirebolu Castle, reaching this one takes effort.

Note: The path begins where the vehicle road ends; there is a short but steep climb. After rain the rocks and moss become slippery; choose a dry day. Not recommended with small children.

Harbour and coast

Fishing boats, a small harbour and tea gardens along the shore. Tirebolu's real pleasure is here: sitting without rushing. The places on the shore are good for a late-afternoon tea.

You can walk along the shore. In the summer months some people swim, but mind the Black Sea current.

Selimağa Fountain

In the district centre, a historic fountain preserved with its inscription. On the road at the castle exit; a stop of a few minutes.

A half-day touring order

  1. Tirebolu Castle (a short climb, the view)
  2. The harbour and a shore walk
  3. Lunch · fish
  4. Selimağa Fountain
  5. A late-afternoon tea garden

If you are going to add Bedrama Castle too, half a day is not enough; set aside a full day.

Accommodation

Tirebolu is a good base for those who want a quieter coastal experience than the centre. Usually better value. The downside: evening options are limited and you need to travel to and from the centre.

On the map

On the map Tirebolu's two castles and harbour cluster together; a scenic half-day.
