Photography in Giresun: Where, at What Hour

Giresun is generous for photography, but timing decides everything. The mist descends in the afternoon, the stone facades want soft light, the waterfalls run full in spring. Hour-by-hour suggestions, spot by spot.

In Giresun the same place looks completely different in the morning and the afternoon. Mist, sea moisture and steep topography keep changing the light. Below I have gathered the best hours, spot by spot.

Giresun Castle · half an hour before sunset

The island, the harbour and the hazelnut groves all enter the same frame. The setting sun catches the walls from the side, bringing out the stone texture.

The morning is quiet too, but the view is backlit; shoot in the morning if you want silhouettes, in the evening if you want detail.

Zeytinlik Neighbourhood · early morning or late afternoon

The cut-stone facades want soft light. The midday sun flattens everything and the shadows harden.

The perspectives opening from the narrow streets to the sea are the most rewarding frames. After rain, with the stones wet, the contrast rises.

Bektaş Highland · early morning

Giresun's most picturesque highland. The real moment: as the mist lifts. The cloud rising among the colourful houses happens in the first hour or two after sunrise.

In the afternoon the mist usually descends and the view closes in.

Sis Dağı · afternoon

Unlike the others, here the mist is the subject. The wall of mist moving over the meadows, single-tree silhouettes, a vanishing horizon. For those who want atmospheric work.

Driving warning: In misty weather, visibility on the mountain road can drop to 10-20 metres. If you stay for photography, do not leave the drive back until dark.

Göksu Travertines · before noon

The turquoise pools give their colour better in direct light. But the crowds build in the afternoon; a weekday morning is the best balance.

A polarising filter cuts the reflection on the water's surface and shows the bottom.

Waterfalls · spring, a cloudy day

Kuzalan and Yedi Değirmenli are at their fullest in spring with the snowmelt. Cloudy weather is ideal for a waterfall: the contrast drops and a long exposure becomes possible.

In sunny midday hours the water glares and detail is lost.

Tirebolu Castle · late afternoon

The cape reaching into the sea and the castle catch the same light as the sun drops to the west. The harbour and boats in front, the castle behind.

One piece of advice: get up early. Giresun's best light is in the first hours of the morning, and at that hour nowhere is crowded.
