Sisdağı: The Highland That Lives Up to Its Name

The name is no coincidence. In the afternoon the mist descends and the view closes completely. This is not a flaw but the reason to go: watching the mist move across the meadows is a different experience.

Some go to Sisdağı for the view and come away disappointed. Because by most afternoons there is no view left. But go with the right expectation and this can be Giresun's most striking highland.

When does the mist descend?

The general pattern is this: clear in the morning, mist in the afternoon. As the day warms, the sea-borne moisture climbs up the slope and wraps the highland.

Two different experiences: a wide valley view in clear weather, a silence where you cannot see a metre ahead in the mist. Both are valuable but they are not the same thing.

How to get there

About 1 hour 50 minutes from the centre. One of the furthest of Giresun's highlands. The road narrows in the final section and the elevation rises quickly.

Driving in mist: Visibility sometimes drops to 10-20 metres. Turn on fog lights, reduce your speed sharply, do not use main beam (fog reflects the light back). If possible, head back before the mist descends.

What's there

Wide meadows, scattered highland houses and the cool that 1,800 metres brings. A jacket is needed even in midsummer. Food options are limited; there are not as many facilities as at Kümbet or Kulakkaya.

Who is it for?

Sisdağı is for those after "atmosphere". Those who want a sharp view in photographs should choose Bektaş, those who want a relaxed day Kümbet. The reason to come here should be the mist itself.

On the map

On the map you can time your visit; Sisdağı is best reached before the afternoon mist.
