A Black Sea tour usually begins in Samsun or Trabzon and runs along the coast road. Giresun is in the middle of this route. The problem is this: most plans give Giresun one night, and that night is spent in the city centre, so the province's real difference, the green, is never seen.
Distances
| From Giresun | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Ordu | ~50 km | 1 hour |
| Trabzon | ~140 km | 2.5 hours |
| Samsun | ~230 km | 3.5 hours |
| Rize | ~215 km | 3.5 hours |
| Şebinkarahisar (own province) | ~150 km | 2.5-3 hours |
Note: Giresun's own interior is further than the centres of neighbouring provinces. Going to Şebinkarahisar takes the same time as going to Trabzon.
How many days to give?
1 night · minimum
The city centre: the castle, Zeytinlik, the museum, the shore. You do not see the green, but it is enough for a transit stop.
2 nights · recommended
One day for the city, one day for the Dereli valley (travertines, waterfall, lake). You see both faces of Giresun. The most balanced option for a Black Sea tour.
3 nights · full
City + valley + a highland. The highland is what sets Giresun apart from its neighbours; the third night adds it.
Route logic
If you are going west to east (Samsun → Trabzon):
- A stop at Bulancak after Ordu, the shore and a meal
- Accommodation in central Giresun
- One day for the Dereli valley
- Espiye and Tirebolu on the way out
- Continue to Trabzon
If you are going east to west, the order reverses; Tirebolu and Espiye are the entry, Bulancak the exit.
How to fit in a highland?
A highland requires a detour off the coast road. The most efficient way: stay two nights in central Giresun and give a full day to the highland. Going up to a highland and continuing to another city the same day ends the day on the road.
Kümbet is the easiest to reach; Kulakkaya is in the forest, with better accommodation options.
Comparison with the neighbours
- Ordu: The Boztepe cable car and city view stand out. The closest neighbour to Giresun, doable as a day trip.
- Trabzon: Well-known spots like Sümela and Uzungöl. More crowded.
- Giresun: Less crowded, quieter highlands, and the only island in the Black Sea.
Giresun's value on the tour is this: highlands not as crowded as Trabzon's Uzungöl, and the only island in the Black Sea. These are worth making time for.
Travel note
Ordu-Giresun Airport is close to both provinces; practical for those who want to start and end the tour by air. But to tour Giresun's nature spots a vehicle is essential; the highland and valley points are not practical by public transport.
On the map
On the map Giresun sits mid-coast between Ordu and Trabzon; the green is inland off the route.
