On the road to Şebinkarahisar there is a slope that most people pass without noticing. A monastery is hidden inside it. The Meryem Ana Monastery is one of Giresun's most striking historic structures, and the reason for its impact is its location as much as its architecture.
Why here?
The monastery is cut into a sheer rock slope. Its entrance is a narrow tunnel; the space opens at the end of the tunnel. This design is no coincidence.
For centuries this region was a line of passage and conflict. Being invisible, being hard to reach, was a defensive strategy. That is also why the monastery survived to today: it could not be found easily, it could not be destroyed easily.
When you pass through the tunnel and reach the space, you understand: those who built this were thinking of hiding, not of display.
How to get there?
On the way to or back from Şebinkarahisar, on the road. It is 2.5-3 hours from the centre to Şebinkarahisar; the monastery is in the final section of that route.
- The final section is narrow and winding; large vehicles struggle
- The road becomes slippery in wet weather
- In winter access is harder because of snow
The visit
| Topic | Information |
|---|---|
| Time | 30-45 minutes |
| Fee | Free / symbolic |
| Elevation | ~1,250 m |
| Difficulty | Medium · tunnel and steps |
The tunnel is narrow and low; it can be challenging for those uncomfortable in enclosed spaces. The interior is cool, so a jacket is useful even in summer.
Note: The floor is damp and slippery in places. Lighting in the tunnel may be limited; carry a phone torch. Do not write on the walls or remove stones.
On the same route
Targeting the monastery on its own is not efficient; make it part of a Şebinkarahisar visit:
- Behramşah Mosque — on the same road, Giresun's oldest mosque
- Şebinkarahisar Castle — on top of the rock
- Tamzara neighbourhood — urban conservation site, 18th-century mansions
- Fatih and Kurşunlu mosques — in the district centre
This route fits in one day, but with the drive there and back from the coast it becomes tiring; staying a night in the district makes more sense.
On the map
On the map the monastery sits on the Şebinkarahisar route; make it part of that day.
